A Cabot Watch Company é uma empresa inglesa criada no início dos anos 70 e que tem desde há 30 anos fornecido os diversos ramos da Forças Armadas britânicas.
Os seus relógios são conhecidos pelas inicias da empresa – CWC – que usa sobretudo movimentos mecânicos de origem suíça.
O resultado desta combinação entre design militar britânico e engenharia helvética consiste em diversas linhas de relógios que têm em comum uma excelente relação preço-qualidade.
O modelo que trago hoje é baseado num movimento Valjoux 7765, calibre simplificado e parente próximo do lendário Valjoux 7750.
Trata-se de um cronógrafo mecânico simples, com data às 3 horas e corda manual. Face aos tradicionais cronógrafos com três sub-mostradores, falta aqui aquele que é menos usado – o totalizador de 12 horas.
Ao melhor estilo militar, a bracelete é uma prática correia tipo NATO em nylon, o que é tanto ou mais apropriado quanto este tipo de correia foi criada precisamente através de uma especificação do exército britânico.
A caixa em aço tem um diâmetro de 40mm. A CWC não indica valores de resistência à água, pelo que devemos assumir que não a possui. O “vidro” do mostrador não é na verdade vidro, mas um material acrílico – imagino que a vantagem em utilização militar é que não há possibilidade de quebra com respetiva libertação de estilhaços, mas para os civis, isto significa um mostrador que irá ganhar bastantes riscos se não houver cuidado!
Deixei o melhor para o fim: o preço para aceder a esta máquina com movimento mecânico suíço é de cerca de 600 euros (£519).

A Gavox é uma jovem empresa cujos modelos têm sempre algo de invulgar, sendo ideais para procura um relógio diferente. E o novo Avidiver não é exceção.

A ideia é simples, mas original: em vez de um bisel rotativo interior, a Gavox dotou o Avidiver de um marcador triangular laranja que é controlado por uma segunda coroa, às 2h00. O marcador pode assim ser usado quer para controlo do tempo de mergulho - como seria o caso de um bisel rotativo num relógio de mergulho convencional - como para referência de um segundo fuso horário através de uma escala secundária de 60 minutos/segundos.

A estética é igualmente muito concebida/conseguida, com caixa de 43mm de diâmetro e um mostrador de dupla camada no qual os numerais e índices principais surgem recortados, o que também facilitou a aplicação generosa de Superluminova para legibilidade no escuro.

A caixa oferece resistência à água até 200 metros, coroas de rosca e fundo roscado com vidro para observação do movimento - um moderno Miyota 9015 que "bate" a um ritmo de 28.800 a/h (4 Hz). O acabamento inclui vidro de safira com tratamento anti-reflexo.

Existem seis variantes, com diferentes acabamentos da caixa (com e sem PVD) e cores de mostrador de bracelete (estas, sempre em borracha de silicone). É possível adquirir o relógio online com preços a partir dos €550.

Haute Horology is changing…

=and not for the better in my opinion. A recent article on worldtempus.com recognizes China as the #1 market for haute horology over the U.S.A. This is bad in my opinion as it shows a major shift in where dollars are going. I have no problem with the Chinese market growing and being able to own and enjoy luxury watches. I worry that they will become such a dominant player that it will cripple other markets including the former largest amrket, the US. The crippling could stem from the weak dollar and soon to be low supply here in the states. If the Chinese market procures all the good product because they are a financial whale, then what will the rest of the world be left with. Slim pickings in my opinion. The same article also reports that AP, specifically the ROO has become the most desired haute horology piece. This is tragic in my mind. How did a classic like the JLC Reverso fall from grace and become replaced by the monstrosity that is the AP ROO. Is that really haute horology, I bet it was based on the severely hard to get factor of the limited edition ROO pieces. Next in line for demand as far as searched market share I believe is IWC. IWC a manufacturer that has some bragging rights, but for the most part, knocks off the Reverso by using movements that the Reverso’s own “House” creates and supplies to them is nothing short of criminal. JLC and their Reverso were at the top, because their watch was tasteful, well designed, timeless, innovative, and given a pulse from a heart that beats in its own house. Answer me why an AP ROO is now at the top of the throne, is it because Arnold S. or Jay Z has a 12 pack of them? If haute horology now means this same koolaid, I will delightfully go thirsty. Changing Times: Daylight Savings Time 'Falls Back' This Weekend, But How Did It Come to Pass

Daylight Saving Time ends in the United States at 2 a.m. on Sunday Nov. 2. That means that if you don’t stay up until 2 a.m., you’re going to want to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night before you go to bed. Otherwise, you will miss that extra hour of sleep in the morning. Please note that the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and most of Arizona don’t participate in DST, but for the rest of us, this is the “fall back” weekend.

The reason for Daylight Saving Time is somewhat obscure. Some say it is practiced in an effort to save energy, but that argument has been called into question. Nonetheless, here’s a little insight into the history of DST for true time junkies.



Some credit the concept to American politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin, who, in a 1784 essay entitled "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light," suggested people get out of bed earlier in the morning to use the light instead of candles.

More than a century later, in 1895, a New Zealand entomologist, George Vernon Hudson, who liked to collect insects in his free time, wanted more daylight time for his studies, so he presented a report to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two-hour daylight savings time program. Though the concept wasn’t embraced internationally, it laid the groundwork. A decade later, in 1905, British builder William Willett proposed the idea of DST, suggesting setting clocks ahead in April and switching them back in September. His idea caught the attention of Robert Pearce, who introduced a bill to the House of Commons in 1908. The concept was opposed by farmers in England and did not pass, but it laid the groundwork. In 1916, Germany was the first country to implement DST and several countries followed suit, including America.



In the United States after World War II, states could select if they wanted to impose DST and on which dates. However, mass confusion caused Congress to establish the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which set a protocol for DST times/dates. Still, some U.S. states/territories don’t participate, and argue the usefulness of it. As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the length of DST in America was extended by four weeks, starting in 2007. Additionally, while it is recognized around the world, not all countries practice DST, and those that do, do so on different dates. At any rate, here we are in the “Fall Back” portion of the “Spring Forward, Fall Back” DST concept. So don’t forget to change your clocks and your watches.
